Webservice Xslt Transformer WebPart for SharePoint 2010 (Extended XML Viewer Webpart)

I’m happy to announce a new webpart that extends the powerfull XML Viewer webpart. This new web part is 100% available at codeplex.

It allows you to provide the URL of a web service, a SOAP Envelope, a SOAP Action and an XSLT definition.

When the webpart is added to a page, it wil automatically access the predefinied web service with the provide soap envelope. The XML that is returned by the web service is transformed by using the user definied XSLT.

This approach allows you to quickly provide show data from an external system in a no-code-solution.

Download the wsp and/or code from codeplex.com

I hope it can help you!

Remote deskop and dual screen

You're never to old (or young) to learn something

Today I heard something about “Use all my monitors for the remote session” and it immediately caught my attention.. was this true? I always thought that dual screen was not supported in remote desktop… I thought wrong!

When you create a remote desktop shortcut on your desktop, click on it with your right mouse and open edit. You'll notice that in the display tab there is a check box called “Use all my monitors for the remote session”, check it and press save. Connect to your server using this remote desktop shortcut.

This is very welcome while developping in Visual Studio 2010, now we as SharePoint geeks can benefit from the power of the dual screen in VS 2010

PS: all hail to Pauwel D for pointing this out!

Happy 2010, which means Outlook 2007 -> 2010

Microsoft Office 2010 won't be released untill june 2010, but the beta is already available, for free. I took the liberty to download the new Office child from http://bit.ly/2GWWj8 and installed it on my laptop.

Post Installtion Information to read
Microsoft posted a short list of Frequently asked questions about 2010 and the installation, you can read here: http://bit.ly/2K6MlL

Upgrade or Side-to-side installation
I didn't want to loose my installed 2007 version so I choose the customize button instead of the upgrade button. Then changed the settings to co-exist and finally changed the installation folder to C:\program files\Office2010 instead of C:\program files\Office.After several seconds the instalation was completed and I needed to reboot windows.

Outlook 2007 and 2010 cannot run side by side. This is also the fact for Groove 2007 and his 2010 versions called ‘SharePoint Workspace’.

Microsoft versus Belgian bandwidth limitations

Economy Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) has ordered an investigation into the data limits on Internet use in our country. Belgium is one of the few European countries where users are restricted by the providers in the download volume.

The investigation comes after a complaint by Microsoft. The download restrictions in our country provides problems for its online video rental service. Microsoft launched earlier this month the Zune video service. This allows users of the Xbox 360 game console films (whether in high definition) directly to their television stream. That will take much bandwidth from several hundred megabytes for simple movies to maximum 14 GB for a feature film in HD.

Since Belgacom and Telenet handles data limits, Microsoft complains that the Zune video rental service in Belgium can not fully develop.

“We await the report of this examination before we make further statements on this issue,” said spokesman Arne Van Den Driessche. (belga / SPS)

Windows 7 shortkeys

A quick summary of some key combinations in Windows 7:

Win+Home: Clear all but the active window
Win+Space: All windows become transparent so you can see through to the desktop
Win+Up arrow: Maximize the active window
Win+Down arrow: Minimize the window/Restore the window if it's maximized
Win+Left/Right arrows: Dock the window to each side of the monitor (If you've got dual monitors, adding Shift to the mix (e.g., Win+Shift+Right arrow) will move the window to the adjacent monitor.)
Win+T: Focus and scroll through items on the taskbar.
Win+P: Adjust presentation settings for your display
Win+(+/-): Zoom in/out
Shift+Click a taskbar item: Open a new instance of that application

More information about these shortkeys can be found here

Public Key Token from signed assembly

This is something I stumbled upon recently and most of you already have this option already in their tools menu in VS. this post is especially to those that just like me did not know it.

While developping a custom layouts page, you need to specify the assembly name where the asp page his code behind class can be found.

something like: Namespace, Version=1.0.0.0,Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=****************

To retrieve this token you could drag and drop your assembly in the gac and copy the token from there. Sn.exe combined with external tool in visual studio offers you a simple menu that displays the public key token of the current signed assembly in no time.

In Visual Studio 2005, click Tools -> External Tools…
Click Add and enter the following into the different fields as displayed in the following screenshot:
Title: Get Public Key
Command: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bin\sn.exe
Arguments: -Tp “$(TargetPath)”
Uncheck all options, except Use Output window\
